Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Cory B — 05 Jan 2010
I've had a long time to let this gestate in my memory, so it gets a review that's a little more brutal than originally intended. It tries to tackle too many things (gay husband, black people, '50s state-of-mind) at once, and what we get is what happens when you multi-task; shoddy results in each task.
And I could never really connect with Moore's character. She was playing buttoned-up housewife, but never really showed us what buttoned-up housewife really thinks/feels. Never really knew Quaid could act (though, still, couldn't connect), and Haysbert can -definitely- do more than hawk insurance.
Looked nice, but the '50s thing made me take it -less- seriously. Haynes is good at making things look pretty and pretending that there's something big at play, but in the end, you realize you're getting just a shell of the movie.
Sorry.....
