Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Michael A Elkana F — 29 Jan 2010
A 2000s movie, set in 1950s, filmed with the style of 50s' melodrama sounds interesting, and props to Haynes because it works, the setting, the color palette, the cinematography, the over-the-top dialogue(s), etc.
But what makes this movie far more interesting and memorable for me is the issues it brought that was considered taboo back at that time: race (including interracial relationship), feminism, and homosexuality, seeing how homosexuals were treated back at that time, how if even you just had a conversation with a (pardon me, no racism intended) black or colored people you would became a "hot topic" in society, etc.
Haynes brings all of these altogether in one great way, Julianne Moore is terrific as Cathy Withaker, a 1950s housewife with thoughts that's simply ahead of her time.
