Review of Far from Heaven (2002) by Joseph S — 09 Jan 2012
I liked the color schemes, and didnt mind the melodrama, but after a point, the story falls flat, and all thats left is the fact thats its excellently stylized to look like another mans films. It doesnt capture the bitterness of something like Sirks "Imitation Of Life", but has all of the dressings. I think Todd Haynes is better when he plays to his own stregnths. The story of a 50's suburb in Conneticut, where a housewife discovers her workaholic husband may be gay, and begins a passionate, restrained, and non-physical relatioship with her educated Black gardener, plays out softly, but otherwise as you would expect.
Its interesting, and not a bad movie by any means, but it felt like more of a curiosity production wise, than anything else.
