Review of Fantastic Planet (1973) by Mike M — 07 Nov 2010
One of the most consistently strange films ever made... a work of frenziedly male - adolescent, even - imagination: a hotchpotch of SF bandes dessinees, the music (and album covers) of Focus and Yes, and doubtless several psychotropic substances to boot.
Its wilder, crueller flourishes clearly stuck with Svankmajer and Gilliam, to name but two; viewed today, it would seem to contain at least as much diverting kitsch as genuine artistry, though those visuals will be a boon for hipster projectionists at retro club nights, and promoters may wish to retain Alain Goraguer's score, too, coming in as it does equidistant between prog rock and the accompaniment to any European porno movie of the period.
