Review of Fantastic Planet (1973) by James-Masaki R — 24 Sep 2011
Taking place in another world where humankind are uncivilized small bug-sized creatures, and the rulers are intelligent giant blue alien creatures, this animated cult trip is the feature debut of Rene Laloux, made in the communist Czechoslovakia.
Obviously a lot of references to anti-communism of the time, but still a bizarrely wonderful film. And the music might be the most enduring part, being countlessly sampled by hip hop and electronic artists over the last 20 or so years.
