Review of Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) by Aaron K — 25 Jun 2012
"Wes Anderson, meet animation. Animation, meet Wes Anderson. And they lived happily ever after..." There's no animated film quite like "Fantastic Mr. Fox," with its hypnotizing set-pieces and dry, sarcastic sense of humor.
The stop-motion is not as smooth (perhaps by design) as the recent "Coraline" or even the older "Corpse Bride" and "Nightmare Before Christmas," but it works well to set "Fox" apart.
Less a kids movie than even those predecessors, "Fox" plays like a Wes Anderson movie first and children's novel adaptation second. It's about a dysfunctional family of well-fleshed (furred?) characters with a bevy of idiosyncrasies that just happen to be foxes.
There are moments of adventure, laughter, sadness, and revelation; what more can you ask from a film?
