Review of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) by Brendan N — 17 Mar 2013

The success of the first was in doubt thanks to the success of the x men films. this series was met with much mix response and rightly so which is good for fans as a reboot is currently being worked on. its a fraction better then the first film but the issues are still present. how they could take a brilliant character like the silver surfer and just make him so utterly boring is beyond me.

The issue really isn't anything to do with the actors who are actually quite well suited to the characters. Jessica Alba is great to look at but she hasn't really got the acting ability to play Sue Storm. Ioan Gruffudd is beyond the role and commonly looks bored with the script.

Tim Story is the main reason these films fail critically with its audience. he dumbs down the story with silly humour and doesn't allow the writers to inject some much needed depth and character development. the silver surfer is completely wasted when it could have been a chance to reinvent the franchise with strong second film. x men was surpassed by x men united because it only added to the depth of the first film with more character. this film seems happy to be dull and boring instead of fun and well created.

The writing from Mark Frost lacks focus and the silver surfer is a complete waste. Dr Doom has no menace just like the first film and it ruins the film. there is no great villain and you don't feel the investment with the story. this put a stump on any future films as they failed to live up to expectations.
