Review of Fantastic Four (2015) by Paul A — 04 Jan 2016
So, this got a lot of hate, but I think I like it better than Avengers 2, which for me was very dull, confusing mash up and I can't even recall the story because it wasn't very memorable. And some of the CGI of A2 was embarrassingly bad. So, relative to Avengers 2 and relative to say, the original FF movies, I liked it. It definitely was lacking a little life - that would have been easy to add - a little more humor and chemistry and interaction. And, for sure, Ben Grimm, please put on some shorts. That was awkward. But, I think this was the right direction to go with FF in general. Good tone, villain was pretty good, overall story was pretty good. I liked it better than where x-men movies have gone - I am ready for x-men reboot.
Thing to remember about superhero movies - the powers of the characters are almost like characters in their own right and need good screen time and presentation. They did ok in this movie, but didn't really take advantage of what they COULD have done. The old FF movies, while painfully campy and poorly cast IMO, did great job at portraying human torch's powers, the silver surfer was amazing and one of the best on screen looking characters in the MU. Ben Grim's rubber suit was unwatchable though,.
I liked this cast better and Thing (with the addition of some Under Armor gear) was good. But they don't really let their powers shine. Miles Teller's powers were portrayed in a cool way, not a silly way, which I liked.
I liked it, kind of wish they were doing sequel, but if Marvel gets it, that may end up being best thing in the end. I don't like Fox making their movies in a MU vacuum.
