It was dark and at the same time it wasn't, not superman but not bat man, dark enough for adults with humor only an adult would get, but sweet enough for the little children so they don't have nightmares.
a third of the movie is about getting their powers and discovering them, a third of them living with them and experimenting on them, and another third if them getting electrocuted by doom and then stopping him.
the dude that played doom was a great villain.
