Review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) by Critical M — 25 Nov 2018
The problem with this movie is the script. THE story IS FAST PACED AND IN ITS OWN WORLD AND DOESN'T CARE IF YOU ARE KEEPING UP OR NOT. It's basically a fleshed out version of backstory mentioned in the book, but doesn't care if you haven't read them or forgot, and won't hold your hand.
The story thus feels all over the place, so much so that it becomes a challenge to keep up with what's happening and why. Unless you've read and remembered all 7 books you WILL be lost: Who's who, what they're after and why all becomes convoluted especially by the end when things get "wrapped up" and the "twist" is revealed, if thats what you want to call it.
It leaves you with more questions than answers, but there is no substance to back it up. On the bright side, the movie is of course visually stunning and the roles are well handled by the actors. This is sadly a movie made specifically and shamelessly for die-hard fanatics, but marketed to the mainstream.
