Review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) by Timothy D — 21 Nov 2018
Despite excellent acting, incredible special effects and production design, the plot is almost non-existent. A wealth of new underdeveloped characters are introduced along with irrelevant side-stories that are spun out over the course of the movie before reaching meaningless, confusing or even ridiculous conclusions, the result of which is a disappointing and somewhat half-hearted MacGuffin effect.
After the heartbreaking loss of Colin Farrell's fantastic villain from the first film, Johnny Depp validates himself with a fascinatingly, multi-faceted and manipulative Grindelwald, and although Jude Law's Dumbledore is let down by the script, Law's performance is spot-on.
All in all, a beautiful film which leaves you asking at the end "what... if anything... actually happened". A disappointing set-up episode.
