Review of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) by Ryley R — 16 Dec 2016
Fantastic Beasts is hardly a bad movie. It was entertaining and had all the magical creatures and moments you can ask for and more. But what it lacked is a little magic, the magic that made the Happy Potter franchise define a generation.
Yes the special effects were better, the creatures were more magical, but the connection between the characters and the audience was just not there. We smiled when Harry was happy, we felt the pain when Ron was sad, and we hurt when Dumbledore died.
This level of connection was simply absent. And without it, it's just another fantasy movie. The fact that it's set in the same world as Harry Potter might help with the ticket sales, but it felt more like a burden in the movie.
With that being said, I am looking forward to see what this franchise has in store.
