Review of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) by David M — 15 Jan 2017
Now that the main Harry Potter books (and their associated films) are done, you might wonder how JK Rowling or the cinema would return to her wizarding world.
The answer is by making a film based solely around a book mentioned in the main Harry Potter story: Newt Scamander's 'Fantastioc Beasts and Where to Find Them'.
1920s set, this also takes place in New York rather than in and around the Hogwarts of the Potter-verse, with Hogwarts and Albus Dumbledore both only mentioned in passing: this takes place, remember, both Harry is even a twinkle in his parent's eyes and before the first rise of Lord Voldemort.
I also have to say that I found this to be nowhere near as engaging as the 'main' Potter storyline, lacking any real hook to draw me in: the visulas may be good, but the story? Not so much.
