Review of Fantasia (2004) by Yeona I — 16 Oct 2009
About ten years ago I decided to give this film a chance. I couldn't get past The Nutcracker Suite. But in ten years this film has grown to become somewhat of a perfect match for me. I now love symphonic music and an quality animation.
And so, I can now say that Fantasia is a masterpiece. The merger of classical music with incredible animation is nothing short of genius. This film pushes the limits of cel animation, and the likes of still haven't been seen in a major studio film to this day.
The animation is just brilliant, and when you think that each frame is hand drawn, hand painted, and filmed on dozens of different planes, you really grow to appreciate the quality. This is truly art, unseen in the vast majority of animated films.
I also appreciated the very mature stance the film took, portraying very adult animation that doesn't lower itself to children, as evident in The Rite of Spring and Night on Bald Mountain. I sincerely wish that Disney would do something as dark and mature, and incredibly animated, as A Night on Bald Mountain.
That piece was my favorite in the film. I'm incredibly glad I finally forced myself to watch this movie, and I was greatly rewarded.
