Review of Fantasia (2004) by Shane D — 02 Nov 2009
Important film inside animation circles, I know because we were told so in animation appreciation class in cinema studies. Film #29, is an interesting beast. Not quite sure who this appealed to when it came out, perhaps everyone.
Animation was still so new and something of this scope would have been well received just for the sheer spectacle alone I'm guessing. Obviously almost 70 years on, this doesn't have the same impact it once did, but you do get a sense of what Disney's influence was on the animation world as a result of this film was.
They aren't just responsible for Dumbo, Snow White and Pinocchio and their ilk, but they created an animation movement and probably inspired the animators that went on to change and innovate throughout the 60s and 70s.
I do have a question. Why isn't Disney getting old Mickey Mouse out there anymore, I mean, all these years...and nothing. Seems like a waste really.
