Review of Fantasia (2004) by Per Gunnar J — 28 Nov 2011
I remember that when I watched it for the first time, as a kid, I never really liked it. I was expecting a more "traditional" Disney film. Anyway, I really liked the film this time. It's truly a masterpiece, at least if you have the slightest interest in classical music. The music score underpinned with the synchronized animations is simply fantastic.
The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 sound track on the Blu-ray disk has the restored Fantasound score by Stokowski using the magnetic copies done for the 1956 reissue. The original optical sound prints were done on nitrate film and have deteriorated beyond restoration. It's really amazing that.
Disney, in 1938, actually developed a multi-channel surround sound technology. Unfortunately it was too expensive to deploy in 2nd world war USA so Fantasia was the only film ever recorded using the technology and most theaters showed it in mono sound anyway due to the cost and effort to set the theater up for Fantasound.
