Review of Fantasia (2004) by Jason V — 27 Jun 2012
Fantasia is not a bad "movie." It's simply not a movie in the conventional sense. Made up of small animated "music videos" set to classical music, Fantasia is only held together by narration by Deems Taylor.
There's no rhyme or reason to each piece; they range from mini-stories to abstract interpretations of the music. And that works against Fantasia more often than not. And running at over two hours, this is a very long, very ambitious "movie" with no narrative throughline.
Three stars for Disney attempting something never done before, for lending "rules" to modern day music videos and for the longevity of some segments, like the sorcerer's apprentice.
