Review of Fantasia (2004) by Adam R — 05 Jan 2014
(Upcoming review) Rating: 9.6/10 Overview: Walt Disney's magnum Opus, truly one of a kind. The music is perfect, the art is perfect, the animation is perfect, so why a 9.6 instead of a solid 10? The whole point of this picture was to transcend the audience into a two-dimensional world of sound, colour and inspiration, all from the passion and imagination of Disney and his team of great artists.
In other words, immersion. That spell that had been put upon the viewers is broken after every two or three segments or so when Deems Taylor appears in the orchestra pit and discusses the following segments as if he were a school teacher.
Why did he have to reveal the segments that were coming up? Instead of surprising the audience, it just built an expectation which might lead to the spectators being a little dissapointed. It just takes you right out of the immersion, which you should NEVER do when you're making a movie like this (or any movie).
Such a journey through a fantasy loses its interest when rudely interrupted. Luckily, the fantastic work presented from the artist, animators and musicians still kept the magic rolling and got us back on track.
Such an amazing and superb film. Bravo!
