Review of Fantasia 2000 (2000) by Steve Y — 25 Jun 2008
There are a few imaginative and breathtaking pieces in this modern "reboot" of the Fantasia concept, but the duds overwhelm them. Who thought "Pomp and Circumstance" would make a good animated study? (Answer: Michael Eisner).
Who picked the Shostakovich concerto, but picked the wrong one, and didn't bother to line the animation up with the rhythm? (Answer: I don't know) And what in heaven's name is Bette Midler doing here? It's worth seeing primarily for the Respighi Whale sequence and the Firebird excerpt at the end, which are both dazzling examples of what a well-chosen piece of music, a good concept, and a talented team of animators can do.
