Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by A R — 28 Jul 2007
Aspects are brighter than some of his films, especially in the early portions. The earthy humor I've always tasted bits of in his previous films are in fuller force as well. But it's still very much a Bergman film, so you have the beautiful visual compositions, the wonderfully rich characters and storylines, and the fantastic elements that serve to reflect psychological states, hidden desires.
The climax is a bit perplexing, but makes sense in light of ghosts appearing and what-not. Impressive.
