Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by John F — 29 Jan 2008
The first thing that strikes me after having just watched this for the first time is that even though this film is quite long it somehow seems to be the most focused Bergman. That said, it did not seem to be labored, kinda like the story just rolled out of his mind onto the screen.
This film holds many experiences within it. Extremely joyous moments to frightening, bizarre and sad ones. Not many filmmakers would or should try to jungle so many characters, stories, themes etc. Somehow Bergman makes them all beautiful and engaging.
