Like "The Seventh Seal", it's an addition to what was only a handful of Bergman films that traded realism for fantasy, but Bergman was skilled in both genres. He intended this to be his last film; it ultimately wasn't, but it remains ones of the most spellbinding odysseys ever captured on film.
