Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Frédéric I — 18 Jul 2009
Seen in it's full five hour glory, Bergman's masterpiece is able to really challenge the task of creating a work of Shakespearian glory. As with the Bard's best work the film swerves easily and successfully between comedy and tragedy, allowing fantasy and spirituality to penetrate the realistic set design and relationships, but does also share his problems of loosing characters for whole acts, a small price to pay though.
