Don't even waste your time with the 3 hour theatrical version. The 5 hour version is essential viewing and should not even be seen in the fractured theatrical version. That being said, this is my favorite Bergman.

It has such a warmth to it which is uncommon if you know Bergman at all. I grew so attached to this extended family,The Ekdahls. Such distinct personalities that make each and every character in this huge cast memorable and interesting.

It's also Bergmans most beautiful film. Not just his directing but the costumes, sets, etc. Everything is pitch perfect. I love how this movie seems to transform itself. It seems wrong to say that because the things that seem preposterous are all so believable in the world that Bergman crafts.

That is what I was most impressed with. How easily I believed and went along with things that would have been easily ridiculous if not in the right hands. I'm sure as hell glad it was. This is one of the most fully realized and rewarding films I've ever seen.

It's one of those films that I get excited about when I think about re-watching it.
