Review of Fanny and Alexander (1982) by Emil K — 09 Feb 2009
Magical and haunting work from swedish-legend Ingmar Bergman. There is two versions of this film out there and I strongly advice you to see the longer over 5-hour TV-version, which in my opinion is way better than the theatrical cut which is 3-hours and 20-minutes long.
Personally I just hate when there are trimmed cuts for theatres or so called director's cuts. In my opinion there is just this one version of a film and that is that. If you later on change the end result, then it's like reworking your own painting.
It changes it and then it just is not the same work. This is the main problem with Fanny och Alexander, there should have been only one cut, suggesting to that over 5-hour long version. As a film this is a long and enchanting journey that casts a strange spell upon you and haunts you afterwards.
