Review of Fanboys (2009) by Buddy K — 06 Jun 2010
A pretty good idea but in the end its really a mixed bag and not nearly as funny as it could have been. The lead character is rather unlikable and seems like one of those "grounded" characters forced into movies like this to make the offbeat supporting characters less offputting, the depiction of Star Trek fans doesn't really cover any new ground and is akin to the depiction of Japan and Hitler in WWII era propoganda, the central motivation of one of the main characters having cancer is unconvincing since the character has no signs of illness and overall the flick is just too in love with Star Wars to be willing to take any shots at The Phantom Menance even though it's the film's central plot device.
In all there's some good stuff and I enjoyed most of the main characters and dug the cameo by William Shatner but it's just to scared to take any chances to make it funnier. Worth renting but not very remarkable unless you make a pilgrimage to every Star Wars convention and harbor an unnatural resentment towards Star Trek fans (they're two entirely different universes, let go of it).
