Review of Fanboys (2009) by Jc E — 03 May 2011
The real beauty of this film isn't in the quality of the filmmaking or the actors, but in the simplicity of the story and how relatable it is to anyone who loves the Star Wars universe. Still, the filmmakers managed to bring a group of actors who really personify that Star Wars geek that we all know (and assumedly love).
Dan Fogler (Kung Fu Panda), Jay Baruchel (How to Train Your Dragon), Sam Huntington (Superman Returns), and Chris Marquette (Just Friends) make for a great geek squad. Throw in Kristen Bell (You Again) as the love interest, a slew of whacky cameos (Seth Rogen, Danny Trejo, Craig Robinson, Danny McBride, and Kevin Smith) along with a few Star Wars alum (Billy Dee Williams, Carrie Fisher, and Ray Park), and the making for this are epic.
The potential of the film is never fully realized, but it's still great entertainment - especially when it comes to the Star Trek vs. Star Wars subplot (William Shatner even has a cameo!). I mean, if nothing else, you get to see Bell in Leia's slave outfit.
What red-blooded American male wouldn't like that? If you've got the slightest nostalgic feelings for the Star Wars saga, you'll probably love this underrated flick.
