Review of Fanboys (2009) by David G — 08 Jul 2011
This is a comedy with a lot of promise - an R-rated road trip that centres firmly on Star Wars geek humour. Unfortunately it just doesn't really work. There are a few laughs to be had (the Star Wars vs.
Star Trek "debates" are a highlight) and it's good for a spot-the-reference/cameo game but the characters are unlikable, the gags all too often feel forced (no pun intended) and by and large it's just not that funny.
Throw in some pointless shoehorned-in subplots (the Jay Baruchel/Kristen Bell romance) and one of the biggest missteps in comedy history (one of the main characters is dying of cancer (!) - an attempt at eliciting pathos that comes off as tasteless and completely out of place) and what you're left with is a disappointing missed opportunity.
