Review of Fanboys (2009) by Phil T — 27 Jun 2012
There is something pure and honest about the characters in Fanboys. They embrace their one true love and refuse to run from it no matter how "nerdy" it might actually be. The film itself carries so many different in-jokes related to the Star Wars and Star Trek universes that non-fans may not fully appreciate the humor.
Coupled with that, though, is the shoddy execution of the story. It hems and haws, more interested in mirroring Episode IV's storyline than actually maintaining it's humor and emotion throughout.
None of the personal stories-especially that of cancer stricken Linus-is developed in any meaningful way. And that is a problem...but not a huge one for those of us who waited with baited breath for Episode I back in 1999.
We can relate to these young adults. In the end, that may be all that really matters.
