Review of Family Guy Presents: It's a Trap! (2010) by Vince K — 26 Jan 2011
There's two types of people in this world: those who think The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie and those who think Return of the Jedi is the best one. I'm one of the few that fall into the latter category. Empire rules too, sure, but Jedi sucks because of cute ewoks? C'MON! Boba Fett dies! Darth and Luke's lightsaber battle is epic! You get to see Vader without the mask! The Emperor shoots lightning bolts out of his hands! But anyways, the makers of Family Guy seem to just HATE Return of the Jedi.
It's evident from the opening scroll, which I thought at first was hilarious. It went on and on, saying shit like they were forced to make this, they didn't even care, they didn't spend any time on it; it sucks, etc. I was shocked to find out they pretty much weren't lying. Not a lot of hard work was put into this. Most of the jokes are painfully bad. (R2-D2 playing jump-rope with little black girls? C'mon!) Even stuff like speeder bikes being mountain bikes instead - kind of funny, but not THAT funny.
There's some shit I liked though, particularly the joke that they ran out of Family Guy characters and had to start borrowing from The Cleveland Show and American Dad. I thought it was awesome to see Roger as an admiral on the Death Star, the German Bear as Wicket the Ewok, and especially - KLAUS AS ADMIRAL ACKBAR! He's still in a fishbowl but he's Admiral Ackbar's head and everything - FUCKING LOVED IT!
Some of it gets better during the third act, with some really funny jokes. But the problem with that is still that they're not as funny as usual Family Guy shit. And I groaned at the Imperial Shuttle growing legs and walking by "casually" when they're giving the fake code to enter the moon of Endor. Other bad shit like that - the movie is just peppered with it. But on the other hand - the constant and harsh ribbing of Seth Green is pretty golden. They went as far as they could with that, LOL.
But thank god I rented this instead of buying it.
