Review of Falling Down (1993) by Claes J — 08 Feb 2013
It's a distressing portrait of social alienation and a very upsetting piece of satire. Douglas delivers; Duvall not so much, though their interplay is very enjoyable. What scares me is that very little is unbelievable in this day of ordinary folly.
Everyone thinks these things, and all it takes is the demolition of a flimsy barrier that, day after day, in some people, just falls down. Notice the symbolism in the weaponry (baseball bat to knife to handgun to rifle to bazooka back to handgun and finally a squirt gun) and in the incidents (nearly all are related to food and commerce, the pillars of American society).
This movie scares the shit out of me.
