Review of Falling Down (1993) by Tycho D — 14 Oct 2009
A divorced and recently fired man finally snaps when he gets stuck in a traffic jam while trying to reach his daughter with a birthday present. Does he rush out of car screaming and wild? NO, he calmly gets out and starts walking towards his destination. Let me assure you that doesn't mean he hasn't snapped.
Along the way he finds several "obstacles" (namely other people). Some become obstacles due to his own passive-aggressive attitude, others are just met with a little overforce for the little injustices they represent. No matter what the case, our hero defuses them all with increasing violence.
The best thing about this film is that even in spite of the protagonist obvious flaws (you know, he's a little wee-bit aggressive and demented) you can't help but root for him all along!
In conclusion: while over-the-top and unrealistic at times, this movie is a tour-de-force trip through LA with one of the best performances by Michael Douglas to date and the solid directing of Schumacher (with some drama once Douglas' character catches up with his daughter and ex-wife), that all warranties a great experience.
