It's very tiny flaws should be ignored, particularly as you have to really twist some notions of certain stereotypes to find them, and any found are done far worse while being ignored, in other movies.

The deteriorating stability of Douglas' character is well-paced, understandable and all the more frightening when we realise it began months earlier - he could be representing quite a few of us, or at least people we know.

To the surprise of the makers, (I think), a lot was made of the negative, racial undertones of the film, but I thought Douglas' deterioration was pretty much generic within the rat race of Western capitalism. He could have been any creed, a woman, disabled or (sadly in modern times) a child.

The film triumphs and is as good a character piece as many of those black and white early 20th century movies you can catch on unfashionable cable channels or late night TV.

Along with 'The Game', the 2 movies are Douglas' longer lasting works and add to his thought provoking portfolio that includes 'The Star Chamber' and even the fairly poor 'Disclosure'.
