Great concept, but fairly predictable ending. The only problem with the whole spirit transfer thing is if the demon can move into animals then there are plenty underground, he could have dug up a worm or an ant or some other bug in the forest at the end instead of "almost dying" before finding the cat.
The only way you could probably get rid of him really is by getting the demon into space or maybe remote locations in the arctic or antarctic.
