Review of Fair Game (2010) by Alex P — 27 Mar 2011
The story of Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson and their battle to clear their names after being smeared by the US administration. The film's biggest advantage is that it's based on a true story - because you could hardly make it up.
Yet it's an unpalatable tale in the telling, because you can't escape the sense that you're hearing just one versions of events, and the inevitable and unsatisfactory outcome is that power wins.
On the other hand, in expressing that age-old truism of story-telling, the film's a success. Penn's performance is weighty and I always like Naomi Watts, who's solid here. But I'd recommend it mostly as one - and just one - record of history.
