Review of Failure to Launch (2006) by Pete G — 31 Mar 2013
Matthew McConnaughey why oh why are you such a shit actor? Really dude you're like Hugh Grant, do you ever actually play a different role? The likeliness of Matthew McConnaughey playing a different role is as likely as pig flying. SJP was equally bland and annoying in this poorly written and nonsensical film. SJP and Matthew McConnaughey have as much chemistry as two planks of wood. It was just tragic to watch. The film is about a 35 year old guy Tripp (McConnaughey) who still lives at home with his parents and his parents hire Paula (SJP) to encourage him to move out. Although the romance between SJP and Matthew McConnaughey is as dry as chapped lips, Zooey Deschanel (Paula's quirky housemate Kit) and Justin Bartha (Tripp's best mate Ace) steal the show and have darn good chemistry. Actually it should have been a romantic comedy about Kit and Ace; they should have traded roles with SJP and Matthew McConnaughey. Zooey Deschanel was fantastic and hilarious and Justin Bartha is great eye candy, but also gives a gentle and modest performance. Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw were great as Tripp's parents. Basically I liked all of the characters apart from Paula and Tripp, I just wanted to slap them both because they were so bland and awful.
Grade: D.
