Review of Factotum (2005) by Felipe M — 23 Feb 2008
I was blown away by Matt Dillon in Drugstore Cowboy. That was a witty and clever story about addicts robbing drugstores. When I saw Barfly, my hair and shirt stunk like stale sour beer and cigarrettes afterward.
But Matt Dillon in a vaguely Barfly remake just didn't quite do the trick. For one, as someone mentioned on Netflix, the actors are too attractive to play the characters. Edward James Olmos would make THE PERFECT Henry Chinaski, and Charlize Theron would make THE PERFECT Jan (with her Monster makeup).
I guess they weren't available and the casting folks had to go with the good-looking folks instead. This has left us with a glamorous-yet-cheapened-down version of an otherwise repulsive, vile, and depressing story.
C'mon- the actors need to fit the characters.
