Review of Factotum (2005) by Gus A — 04 Mar 2010
Lately, I've been looking for independent movies trying to avoid mainstream features in order to get to know the work of mostly unknown directors, screenwriters, etc. When I say unknown I'm talking for myself, and as a result of my research I stepped into Factotum, a movie directed by Bent Hamer starring Matt Dillon.
The storyline is based on the life or alter-ego of Charles Bukowski portrayed by Matt Dillon, apparently Dillon always plays the same guy with the same facial expression in almost every movie he's in, but the good thing of this one is that the character fits perfectly to Dillon's attitude and facial expressions so that's what makes the performance credible.
The movie has sometimes a funny dialogue and one liners that make you think. This is actually a very poetic movie because of the main character being a writer and all, but the random stuff that he does through his journey trying to get a good job in order to get money to drink, gamble and to score make this lightweight feature watchable.
I don't highly recommend this movie but it's only 90 minutes long so you won't be wasting that much if you give it a try.
