Review of Facing the Giants (2006) by Brandon M — 07 Jan 2010
Looking at other reviews of this film, I feel that many people rate it lower simply because it is a Christian film. The goal of actor/director Alex Kendrick was to reach a broader population with his evangelical message through entertainment. Whilst some people will not have the same connection to the evangelical message, this film should still be rated objectively as an entertainment vehicle.
At an entertainment level, it is certianly more than passable. Borrowing significantly from Remember the Titans and We Are Marshall, they create an inspirational story. Whilst none of the actors will be compared to Denzel or even Matthew McConaughey in the near future, they are all passable.
As a deist, I personally did not connect as closely as others to the evangelical message. That would perhaps be the criticism about this film that I agree with, it is preaching to the choir. Evangelical Christians will love it, but for everyone else, the film does not make an attempt to cross the divide and broaden the discussion about faith.
