Review of Faces in the Crowd (2011) by Rikard B — 14 Dec 2011
The three stars I give this movie I base solely on the first hour of the movie, which was brilliantly directed, executed, and included a stellar performance by the underrated Milla Jovovich. The movie really let you into the psyche of someone suffering from face blindness.
I was so into it, I was ready to order the bluray on the spot to have it in my collection. It gave me a similar vibe to the movie Memento. The difference is, Memento is brilliant until the end. This movie sadly suffers from really poor writing and coincidental cliches for the final thirty five minutes that it becomes a B movie thriller with no captivating quality whatsoever, and can't explain how she can't recognize voices either for some reason.
You'll see what I mean. You won't believe you are watching the same movie. It is like a new crew came in to shoot the second half for a high school class. Milla still makes the most of her character and the movie ends well (the final two minutes only).
The movie actually gets so bad that I would not recommend it to viewers. If you like well done psychological thrillers, watch the first hour and really enjoy it for the ambitious movie it is and turn it off before it really goes south.
