Review of Faces (1968) by Luke P — 03 Jan 2009
"So what have I got after all those years? A big house, a kooky wife and a kid who wears sneakers.".
This is where American independent film started. "Faces" is a manic-depressive portrait of upper-middle class America, where husbands are drunk cheaters and women are suppressed house-wives. The dialogue and style and mood come right off the Nouvelle Vague, but there is something distinctly sad and American about it as well. This was my first Cassavetes, but even in one take I can spot a distinct eye, pace and passion.
