Review of F for Fake (1973) by Will G — 19 Dec 2007
It's a film. No, it's a documentary. No, it's a film posing as a documentary. Whatever it is, this Orson Welles film is brilliant. Working through a series of well-publicized contemporary fakes and fakers, Welles produces what is probably the first great documentary ever made.
It is as good, and was obviously the inspiration for, the style of the greatest documentaries today. Zooming in on the most famous art forger in the world, as well as the fake who decided to write a biography of him called FAKE, and analyzing his own career moves involving fakery, Welles creates such a great film that it seems like he may even be at the top of his game.
This one is certainly worth checking out, if you're interested in Welles, or in art or aesthetics, or just in a good time with a film.
