Review of F for Fake (1973) by Kevin N — 11 Dec 2009
A magician never reveals his secret, but Welles gets damn close in this revealing and playful documentary on the wonderous art of trickery. It is such a personable piece of art, especially coming from this filmmaker, and I loved getting so close to a man who will always remain at least partly a mystery to the world.
The film is all over the place but it serves the narrative perfectly; semi-biographies and investigative lunacies pepper the movie until its best bit- a quick but intruiging reflection on Welles himself, and his impressions of himself as an illusionist.
Stylish, fast and care-free.
