Review of Eyes Without a Face (1960) by Chris H — 24 Feb 2011
By far one of the creepiest films I've ever seen. I watched Audition last night. Doesn't even compare to this one. The surgery scene was absolutely grisly, as was the dog scene. The actors and actresses were all amazing. Alida Valli was simply creepy as the foreign 'sidekick', for lack of a better word. Edith Scop made you sympathize with her, yet at the same time have you turning your head in disgust. Several themes were brought in this movie that were way ahead of their time, also. In fact, the whole movie was way ahead of its time. Still, the black and white gives it something. A remake would be tragic. With the mask, she's a sad, walking mannequin. Without the face, she's ghastly. With the graft, she looks human, but...she's doesn't seem human.
This film leaves you on a high note. I'm not sure if I will ever get some of these pictures from this movie out of my head. Ever. I'm not one to have nightmares after movies, but this one just might. Absolutely terrifying.
