Review of Eyes Without a Face (1960) by Brooke J — 24 Feb 2011
Franju has been lumped in with the French New Wave by many, and, if 'Nouvelle Vague' is an accurate label for his works, Eyes Without a Face would certainly be the only New Wave 'horror' film of which I am aware.
It is a truly unique horror film, as you may well imagine. Franju does not indulge in cheap thrills or horror cliches, and therefore the creepiness of the film is not compromised by an "oh, i've seen this before" response from the viewer.
The soundtrack (when present) is eerie and appropriate, the acting is understated, and the gore is sparsely distributed but effectively disturbing upon occurence. I would recommend this film to anybody seeking a truly original horror flick.
