Review of Eyes Without a Face (1960) by Jonathan A — 29 Jul 2009
Chilling French shocker about an obsessive plastic surgeon who captures pretty women in order to try and successfully graft their faces onto that of his disfigured daughter. Effectively creepy thanks to some tight cinematography and a lack of dialogue where the moments of utter silence and graphic imagery take ahold of the audience with Grand Guignol gusto.
I'm impressed that I found myself disturbed and squirming in my seat from a film that's nearly 50 years old! The music was pretty effective as well, although that bad carnival theme from the opening was incredibly annoying.
Modern audiences who enjoyed tense thrillers like "Hard Candy" may want to check this out for an equally lurid experience.
