Review of Eyes Without a Face (1960) by Leighton T — 19 May 2011
It is an extremely affecting horror film simply in the amount of restraint Franju uses to tell his story. Every scene trickles into the other further grasping you as you go along with it. There is a very much a Gothic quality which makes all the more wonderful.
It feel like it should be campy, but it comes off as truly disquieting, haunting and is made better by some truly beautiful cinematography/images. The scene of the face removal, with absolutely no sound except the doctor's voice, was like a slow grinding on both the eyes and the mind.
