Review of Eyes Without a Face (1960) by Martin S — 30 Nov 2011
The premise can be easily associated with a 50's B-movie, and it could have ended up like such, but it's a very sophisticated horror film despite it's macabre concept. The plot however could have been expanded, the characters are somewhat lacking and the film's conclusion feels off, not to mention the carnival-esque soundtrack which is too silly. It doesn't make the film more effective.
Despite these flaws, Les Yeux Sans Visage ("Eyes Without a Face") is nonetheless a cinematic gem! It is an atmospheric horror film with a sense of art house that leaves you with images that are both haunting and beautifully phoetic.
