For the 50s this was totally daring and cutting edge. The creepiness works thanks to a great story and plenty of silence. The pacing is slow and methodical but ultimately very believable. It's tragic, beautiful, disgusting and artistic.

The cinematography is flawless in its black and whites. This is one of the very best horror films from the golden age and it still holds up today. The Criterion version also includes Franju's very disturbing first short film focusing on animal slaughterhouses.

Brutal stuff.
