Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Jacob N — 11 Apr 2011
Kubrick's final stroke of genius evokes every conceivable emotion. "Eyes Wide Shut" plays upon the star status of its leads in order to dismantle traditional Hollywood glamor while dissecting the inherent (though often hidden) fears of unfaithfulness in marriage.
Alongside the pitch-perfect performances, the use of dream to cloud distinctions between reality and fantasy--as well as Kubrick's (trademark) mind-blowing compositions--underlines the undeniable importance of the unconscious in decisions both great and small.
Bloody brilliant.
